National Health Center Week August 7 – 13

National Health Center Week is an annual celebration to raise awareness about the mission and accomplishments of America’s health centers. Community health centers serve 30 million patients and provide care to 1 in 6 people covered by Medicaid. In addition to providing affordable primary and preventative health services, health centers also provide critical dental, vision, and behavioral health services. Health centers have a dedicated history as health care homes to millions. These centers produce innovative solutions for the most pressing health care issues in their communities and reach beyond the walls of conventional medicine to address the social determinants of health affecting special patient populations. During the week of August 7 – 13, we celebrate the work and services health centers provide. And we honor the front-line providers, staff, and patients who lost their lives during the (ongoing) COVID-19 pandemic.

The District has programs to ensure a coordinated system of health care for DC residents across a number of health care facilities. Visit the DC Primary Care Association website for a list of DC health centers and DC Health’s website for a directory of additional facilities.

New Film Chronicles Addiction in Communities

In recognition of National Recovery Month, free screenings of the documentary TIPPING THE PAIN SCALE begins later this month in the District. The film follows individuals grappling with the current systemic failures of how we have dealt with addiction in communities and their journey to develop and employ new, innovative, and often controversial solutions to the problem. It is a quasi-anthology, weaving characters through their own stories as they connect to the issues plaguing all communities and the country in an urgent fight to save lives.

The first screening takes place August 31 at the Greenberg Theater in Ward 3 and at THEARC in Ward 8. Additional screenings are scheduled at locations throughout the District in September. Learn more here.
