July is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month

National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month is observed each July to bring awareness to the unique struggles that racial and ethnic minority communities face regarding mental illness in the United States. The COVID-19 pandemic has made it challenging for racial and ethnic minority groups to get access to mental health and substance-use treatment services. That’s why healthcare providers and individuals are encouraged to educate themselves and their communities regarding mental health stigma with available tools and resources. The HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) has a website to help raise awareness and mitigate mental health stigma in minority communities. There are also several local minority-led mental health organizations dedicated to providing structurally competent and culture-specific counseling and therapy for residents right here in DC. In some cases, these services are provided both in the community and at home. We invite you check out these organizations to learn more:

DHCF and CRISP Announces DC HIE Consent Management Solution Project

CRISP DC is partnering with DHCF to develop a comprehensive, open-source consent management solution to enable compliant electronic exchange of behavioral health information, including substance use disorder (SUD) data protected by 42 CFR Part II, through the District of Columbia Health Information Exchange (DC HIE). Based on a patient’s authorization, this data is shared with treating providers through the DC HIE. CRISP DC piloted the configurable electronic consent management tool to initial user groups over the last year and is prepared to make this tool available to all clinical CRISP users by July 2022. Click here to download the PDF one-pager.

Stay connected with the Integrated Care DC project to hear program updates and join technical assistance sessions to help your care team understand and integrate the consent tool into your practice.

2022 DMV Perinatal Mental Health Symposium Call for Proposals

Join us for the 4th Annual Perinatal Mental Health Symposium to be held virtually on Monday, October 24, 2022.

This year’s theme is “And Justice for All.” Attendees will leave this year’s Symposium with expanded awareness of the systemic factors that impact perinatal people’s lived experiences and increase risk factors for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders in the communities we serve.

Our agenda will implore attendees to consider the question, “What does justice look like?” while offering innovative and timely solutions to improve outcomes and increase equitable access to culturally affirming perinatal health and mental health care.

Do you work with the perinatal population? Advocate for policies to support perinatal mental health? Spearhead an innovative program at your organization? Have personal insights to share about your own pregnancy and postpartum journey? Click here to submit your proposal by July 15.

Advancing Integrated Mental Health Solutions – Collaborative Care Resources

Collaborative Care (CoCM) is a specific type of integrated care developed at the University of Washington that treats common mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety that require systematic follow-up due to their persistent nature. Based on principles of effective chronic illness care, Collaborative Care focuses on defined patient populations tracked in a registry, measurement-based practice, and treatment to target. Trained primary care providers and embedded behavioral health professionals provide evidence-based medication or psychosocial treatments, supported by regular psychiatric case consultation and treatment adjustment for patients who are not improving as expected.
